Rashguard Care
Whether you're new to Jiu Jitsu or not, it's always a good idea to revisit how to care for your training gear. Here we're specifically looking at rash guards.
When looked after properly a decent rashguard can last you years. We've been going for almost five years now and I still use our early releases on the mats now. I'll dive into some top tips for longevity here.
Washing your rashguards
Most rash guards are a combination of Polyester, spandex and in some cases nylon. What that means is you need to wash them on a lower heat than most. We recommend 30 Degrees. Extreme heat will melt your rash guards, and higher heats washed repeatedly can reshape and deform them. Which you don't want to happen.
Put them on a long soak with plenty of washing powder to help get the stink out.
Drying your rashguards
The only thing to remember here is not to stick your rashguard, shorts or Gi in a tumble dryer. Again the extreme heat will either shrink or melt your rash guards, ruining them. Radiators are fine, especially if you live in colder countries with bad weather. As are clothes horses. The best option in a warm climate is to dry them on a washing line outside. The heat obviously helps but direct sunlight can also help get rid of any nasties lurking too, an added bonus!
Top Tip to get rid of bad smells
Is to add a cup of white vinegar to your wash load, the acidity of the vinegar helps to neutralise bad odours and keep your gear fresh without damaging the actual integrity of the rashguard.
That's it!
Enjoy and may your rashguards live forever.
See you on the mats,
Rick
